We are seldom satisfied with what we have and always want what we don’t.  I have straight hair, and I always admired curly hair. I thought it looked beautiful, voluminous and gorgeous( and I still think curly hair looks all of these). In due course of time, I came to terms with my straight hair and managed to take care of them.

Fast forward to my daughter’s birth. She was born with curly hair and developed a fear to get them cut, combed, or even washed. Hair wash is somehow taken as a punishment, even though I use tear-free kids shampoo(mamaearth baby shampoo review coming soon). I even used her baby shampoo once and confirmed it does not sting eyes(things moms do!). Since hair wash is generally accompanied with countdown, using conditioner is out of the window.

As a result, combing hair after wash is a tedious job, often accompanied by running and tears. I am not comfortable with spraying my kid’s hair with chemicals, so I don’t use normally available serums on her hair.

When I saw mamaearth has launched a hair detangler for kids, I got excited and ordered it. I trust mamaearth brand to deliver products safe for my baby as I have been using their baby products from the time of my daughter’s birth.

This is the first time I found a hair detangler, from an Indian brand, which is marked as safe to use from 6+ months.

It has a pleasant smell and is not overbearing to the nose. Even those with sensitive nose won’t mind the smell. The smell evaporates after some time.

Only key ingredients are mentioned on the bottle. They are

mamaearth hair detangler ingredients

As you can see from the above list, most of the ingredients are good for hair and very few chemicals are included. Hence I would say, this is indeed safe to use on kids.

My Experience

This is a silicone and paraben-free detangler which is marketed as safe for anyone above 6 months age. Since I’m always on the lookout for the magic potion to detangle hair, I tried this on myself and my daughter’s hair.

It comes in a cute, white, opaque, spray bottle with a lot of drawing to attract kids’ attention. The front cover has a moon, stars, rainbow and a unicorn with perfectly brushed hair. The back of the bottle contains ingredients, usage directions and other details about the product.

As the bottle is opaque, it is difficult to gauge how much product is remaining. The bottle has an outer and an inner cover to prevent leakage. Even though it is safe to carry in bag, the medium-sized bottle size is inconvenient to carry around.

When sprayed, the product has very watery consistency. While combing it feels as if the hair is still wet and it felt a little bit sticky. The sticky touch went off once the hair dried off.

As said earlier, I tried mamaearth hair detangler on my as well as my daughter’s hair.  I didn’t observe much difference in my hair appearance; it didn’t help much in removing tangles or reducing breakage. I thought maybe it didn’t work on my dry hair.

Next, I tried it on my daughter’s hair; I sprayed on her dry hair, gave it a minute to do its magic and then started combing her hair. Result? Slightly better manageable hair with lesser tangles but nothing major to make us happy.

Due to watery consistency, I ended up spraying a lot of product in my daughter’s hair and soaking her hair wet. Once dried, her hair was better moisturized and styled. So I will say, it meets it moisturizing claims.

Good Points

  1. A silicone-free hair spray for kids
  2. One product can be used for both kids and adults
  3. good ingredients list with mainly healthy ingredients and very few chemicals
  4. moisturizes hair and reduces tangles slightly

Not so good

  1. It didn’t detangle hair considerably, only slight improvement
  2. Tend to overuse due to  watery consistency
  3. It didn’t control frizz

I would recommend this product for kids as this mainly has ingredients which can be used safely on kids. As kids’ hair is generally soft this product would add some moisture and keep it properly styled.

It does not add enough moisture or detangling capability to be used on adults’ dry or frizzy hair. Give it shot if you have soft hair and are looking for something to add some extra moisture. Skip this if you are looking for something heavy-duty to take care of morning tangles.

I would certainly not buy this for my hair. I may buy this for my daughter as it is safe to use on kids and also moisturizes her curly hair well.

My rating

2.5 spoons of happiness
